Toenail Fungus Treatment in Berkshire using the Lunula Nailaser – a revolutionary new effective method of treating fungal nails.

Toenail Fungus Treatment in BerkshireLots of people develop a fungal nail infection at some point in their life.  Usually it’s not a serious condition although it can be embarrassing as well as difficult to treat.  The Hartland Clinic are delighted to be able to offer a revolutionary new effective toenail fungus treatment in Berkshire called the Lunula Nailaser.  This treatment is only available at a small number of Podiatry Clinics in the country.

Symptoms

A fungal nail infection develops slowly and may not cause any obvious symptoms at first.

As it progresses, the infection can cause:

  • thickening and distortion of the nail – it may become an unusual shape or texture and be difficult to trim
  • discolouration of the nail – it may turn white, black, yellow or green
  • pain or discomfort – particularly when using or placing pressure
  • brittle nails – pieces may break off and come away completely

The skin nearby may also become be itchy and cracked or red and swollen.

Causes

Most fungal nail infections occur as a result of the fungi that cause athlete’s foot infecting the nails.  The nail fungi normally live harmlessly on your skin, but they can sometimes multiply and lead to infections. The fungi prefer warm, dark and moist places like the feet.

There is an increased likelyhood of a fungal nail infection if you:

  • wear shoes that cause your feet to get hot and sweaty.
  • don’t keep your feet dry.
  • walk around barefoot in places where fungal infections can spread easily, such as communal showers and swimming pools.
  • have a weakened immune system.
  • have certain other health conditions, such as diabetes, or psoriasis.

Preventing fungal nail infections

You can reduce your risk of developing a fungal nail infection by:

  • keeping your hands and feet clean and dry.  Dry skin and nails are less likely to become infected .
  • Avoid injuring your nail. Cutting nails too short is a common cause.
  • wearing well-fitting shoes made of natural materials and clean cotton socks – these will allow your feet to “breathe”.  If your socks get damp then change them.
  • clipping your nails to keep them short – don’t share clippers, socks or scissors with other people because this may spread infection.
  • not sharing towels and socks with other people and ensure your towels are washed regularly.
  • not walking around barefoot in public pools, showers, and locker rooms – wear shower sandals when using a public pool or shower.
  • replacing old footwear that could be contaminated with fungi.
  • treating as soon as possible to avoid the infection spreading to your nails.

Here’s how the Lunula Nail Laser works:

  • The podiatrist targets the laser light from the Lunula Laser on the infected toes and surrounding tissues.
  • Precisely targeting the laser light is done via ‘intelligent’ patient guards attached to the toes.
  • The two wavelengths of laser light penetrate deep below the nail surface to reach the infected nail bed.
  • The laser destroys the fungus in the nail bed while preserving healthy tissue.
  • The fully automated Lunula Nail Laser ensures the correct dose is given for each treatment every time without fail.
  • The podiatrist can treat 4 toes simultaneously in 15 minutes.
  • Typically we need  3 laser treatments to fully eradicate fungus.
