What is Fungal Nail infection?
Fungal infection in the nail is normally caused by one particular fungus called Trichophyton Rubrum. Our skin naturally has fungus on it and it is normally controlled by a very weak acid secreted by our sweat glands. The fungus will overwhelm these natural defences when conditions on the skin are moist and warm. In these circumstances we develop a fungal infection in the skin called “Athlete’s Foot”.
Around 30% of the population develops this condition and it is the fungus that is responsible for this infection that spreads into toe and finger nails. Research suggests that approximately 25% of the adult population under 60 years of age will have a fungal nail infection and this can increase to 50% of adults over 60 years of age.
Will the infection clear up without treatment?
No. The infection is contagious and if left untreated can spread to other nails. Once the infection is in the nail it can cause the surrounding skin to become infected, this can cause tissue breakdown and a bacterial infection, which can become quite serious.

How does Lunula Laser work?
Lunula Lasers impressive clinical response stems from its two wavelengths: 405 nm (violet) and 635 nm (red). Each wavelength performs a very specific photochemical function to treat fungal infections.
Lunula targets the Mitochondria in the fungal cell. Mitochondria are like “mini power stations” which produce the energy for the fungal cell to survive. They do this by creating a very fine balance of chemicals in their membrane, which can alter to allow them to perform a process called “cellular respiration”. Cellular respiration is vital to the cells survival as it allows chemicals in and out of its membrane allowing it to function. One key protein within the membrane is Cytochrome C. This co ordinates cellular respiration and the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which is the fuel that drives all the processes, that allows the fungal cell to function and survive.
Lunula Laser utilises the principle of Photochemistry. Photochemistry involves exposing specific cells to certain wavelengths of light, which can trigger a cascade of reactions. Lunula targets Cytochrome C in the Mitochondrial membrane. These reactions are the key to killing the fungal cell.
How do the two Lunula wavelengths work?
405nm targets Cytochrome C in the membrane of the Mitochondria. Because they are sensitive to this wavelength of light it triggers a reaction called oxidative stress. This leads to two further reactions, firstly, the overproduction of Reactive Oxygen Species (specifically Hydrogen Peroxide), which causes damage to the Mitochondrial and Fungal cell membrane. Secondly, the release of Cytochrome C into the cell – This causes irreversible cell death. These cellular reactions cause localised cellular inflammation.
635nm also targets Cytochrome C in the membrane of the Mitochondria and triggers the same cascade of cellular events as 405nm. This wavelength also triggers ATP to produce Nitric Oxide – which dilates localised blood vessels. This increase in blood flow together with cellular inflammation initiates the body’s natural immune response and white blood cells are attracted to the nail and surrounding area. White blood cells contain a number of “killer cells” that destroy pathogens such as Fungus.
The combination of the two wavelengths and how they impact the fungal cell is what makes Lunula unique laser technology.

How many treatments will I need?
Mild infections usually require 4 treatments. However, for moderate/ severe infections 6-8 treatments maybe required. The Podiatrist will discuss this with you during your Initial Assessment.
What will the Podiatrist do at my first appointment?
During your Initial Assessment the Podiatrist will talk through your medical history and prescription medication currently being taken and assess whether you are medically suitable for the treatments we offer.
We would always conduct a microbiology test to confirm the diagnosis of fungal infection. This is important as other medical conditions can discolour nails, which appear similar to a fungal infection. Once the assessment and the test are complete the most suitable combination treatment will be discussed with you and treatment will commence quickly.
